The Homi Bhabha National Institute was accredited as a deemed to be university by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in June 2005 and started its academic programmes in 2006. It brings together ten premier institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy under a single research driven umbrella and makes available vast research infrastructure and faculty resources within the DAE institutions for human resource development. A strong emphasis on research based academic programmes makes the Institute a true 'research university'.

The Institute emphasises research on topics that can be described as 'India driven', a tradition already established by the DAE institutions since their inception. It fosters academic collaborations both at the national and the international level. The Institute continues to work towards development of indigenous nuclear technological capability by following a science based approach.

The Self Study Report (SSR) prepared in accordance with the requirements for accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) provides an overview of how the Institute is striving to achieve highest standards in the conduct of its academic programmes. The SSR is presented in two volumes.

Volume 1 includes the following.

• The Executive Summary.
• The Profile of the institute.
• Criteria-wise inputs.

Volume 2 includes evaluative reports of its ten Institutions called Constituent Institutions.
