The Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) was established in 2005 under section 3 of the UGC Act. The role of HBNI is to nurture in-depth capabilities in nuclear science and engineering and to serve as a catalyst to accelerate the pace of basic research and facilitate its translation into technology development and applications through academic programs, viz., Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering, Physical, Chemical, Mathematical, Life and Medical & Health Sciences while encouraging inter-disciplinary research. Additionally, academic programs in the domain of Applied Systems Analysis have also been identified to ensure the availability of adequate qualified human resources to address issues pertaining to nuclear law, the economics of nuclear power, nuclear security, nuclear proliferation, intellectual property rights etc. HBNI has been accredited by NAAC with a score of 3.4, as a category 'A ' University in 2021. In the MHRD's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) exercise for the academic year 2021, HBNI received 18th rank in University category and was placed at 36th position among 1657 institutions in the overall category.
With a view to facilitate the translation of the R&D in the laboratory to the Industry and for the welfare of the common man, HBNI has set up “HBNI-Industry Linkage Centre (HILC)”. The Center will also facilitate skill development of HBNI PhD student by way of internship in Industry.
♦ Towards the objective of skill development of HBNI students, HILC will facilitate their internship in Industry for a period of 3-6 months.
♦ Students who have completed a substantial part of thesis work of their Ph.D program, as well as those who have submitted the thesis/synopsis but are yet to be awarded the degree, will be eligible for the internship.
♦ With a view to utilize the vast experience of former scientific and technical experts from DAE, and particularly the former faculty from CIs/OCC units, for the benefit of Industry, HILC will facilitate the interaction between them and industry for taking up consultancy projects.
♦ HILC will facilitate R&D collaboration between Industry and HBNI students / faculty with the aim of scaling up processes, commercializing / incubating new technologies, developing new processes / products of interest to DAE, etc.
♦ A large number of technologies in the field of Agriculture and Bioscience, Radiation technology, Advanced instrumentation, Medical equipment, Engineering, Environment, Chemical and Water technology, etc., have been developed by scientists and engineers of DAE. Many of them are amenable for opening starts up ventures by Alumni / PhD students of HBNI as well as other institutes/ Universities.
